Since February 2001, the Montebello Police Department has been in partnership with the cities of El Monte, Irwindale and Baldwin Park in the Air Support Program. The unit utilizes two Robinson 44 helicopters based out of the El Monte Airport. The helicopters are equipped with forward-looking infrared image sensing equipment and GPS to help locate persons on the ground during hours of darkness and to respond to locations quicker. Assigned to the unit are two Montebello Police Corporals as a pilot and tactical flight observer. Use of the helicopters has made law enforcement more effective in its ability to respond to calls quicker and to be able to see more. As a result, criminals are caught faster and cases are solved more often, creating a safer community to live in.
