S.W.E.E.T. (Succeeding with Education, Empowerment & Training) is a program that was originally established in 1993 to provide prevention and intervention services to at-risk youth and their families, at no cost. The program is aimed at youth ages 10 – 17 yrs. of age, and mentorship for youth 18 – 21 yrs. is through volunteer activities. Services include recreational, educational, cultural and personal/professional development, life skills and job training through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), and workshops that bring awareness to youth on various social topics. Youth are recommended to the program on a referral basis, such as through the After School Program, Montebello P.D., M.U.S.D., Juvenile Courts, Social Services, and Walk-In participants.
The program honors confidentiality for all participants’ cases and individual services are recommended based on the staff assessment at the initial orientation. Advisory sessions are offered to each participant individually and in group forums; however professional counseling services are referred to outside agencies and assigned to certified counselors. The program accommodates a caseload of up to 50 participants and operates year-round; participants meet with staff at the Parks & Recreation Office during regular business hours, and/or according to the previously scheduled calendar of activities at other park facilities such as Hensel Youth Center, Reggie Rodriguez Community Center, and Holifield Park.
