The Montebello Fire Department-Fire Prevention Bureau heads up the Public Fire Education that takes place in Montebello. These programs include events such as Fire Service Day, held in May; and Fire Prevention Week, held in October-which commemorates The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, both of which allow the community to visit and tour the local fire stations.
In addition, the Fire Department provides specialized fire education programs to schools, day cares, and senior citizens. These programs provide information about the proper installation and use of smoke detectors, establishment of emergency evacuation plans, and the “STOP, DROP, and ROLL” program.
In 2001, the Montebello Fire Department developed the Emergency Mitigation and Occupational Safety and Health (EMOSH) Program, which provides Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance training to local businesses and establishes Citizens Emergency Responses Teams (CERT’s) throughout the City of Montebello.
Also in 2001, the Montebello Fire Department established the Montebello Junior Fire Academy, which is a week long program designed to provide local youth an opportunity to learn how to use basic fire equipment, and search and rescue techniques, in a learning environment.
